I'm Healthy! [Jan. 7th, 2010|07:03 pm]

bart_calendar
My doctor's replacement has yet to set up shop so the pharmacy sent me to the other doctor in our neighborhood for my Not Go Crazy Pills prescription.

Her office was going nuts. As she told me later everyone gets sick after the holidays and she wasn't exactly prepared for a rush of not only all her patients but all my doctor's patients as well.

So, I had to sit over two hours in her waiting room. Once I saw her, I realized I know her, in that "hey, how are you" kind of way that happens in neighborhoods. We caught up on some general quartier gossip and then she gave me an exam.

It turns out I have the blood pressure of an athlete. She asked me if I play football. My blood pressure results always astound Rome Girl and I given that I drink and smoke every day and eat pork chops and bacon as much as possible.

The good news on all this is that I've now had two doctors tell me that my occasional chest pains are simply panic attacks and that my heart rate and blood pressure are in tip top shape.

Go Team Me!

I suppose if this is what floats your boat, great.  Far be it from me to tell you what to do, unless you're cluttering up a scarce graduate school seat while you plan this kind of lifestyle.

However, why does pregnancy have to be included as a default?  Do they have a different group for women that don't want to be pregnant?  Or is it just a given that all of these traits are included together?  And what kind of guys would join?  Is this a matchmaking group?

This is just so far from how I think of myself it makes me go...urghprofroeurgh.

Are there any political issues, such as abortion or capital punishment, that are so fundamental to your core values that you could not respect and/or trust someone who held a contrary view?

Montpellier Doctor Madness [Jan. 7th, 2010|01:28 pm]

Well, they've taken the brass shingle off my doctor's office, which makes sense since he was supposed to retire last month.

Instead there is a chalkboard with faded writing on it that may either be the name of his replacement or random graffiti.

I hope there is a doctor working there, because I have roughly four days of Not Go Crazy Pills left. I want to go there because I do know that a doctor bought his practice, so the new one would have my records and I wouldn't have to go through a huge song and dance to get my pills.

But, I guess I won't know until I ring the bell and see if anyone answers.

Yay and voodoo [Jan. 7th, 2010|10:24 am]

Thus says the text I just got from [info]doctorstewie when it was finally ascertained, through a flurry of text messages, that he wants to be my boyfriend and I want to be his girlfriend.

Oh the joy of predictive text! I imagine he wanted ‘woohoo’ (which I actually got in the following message from [info]saintmaryuk after she’d been told the news) but part of me likes ‘voodoo’ rather better.

Found this in the only political comm I'm in. I haven't seen it in here, but let me know if I've failed and missed it.

"The blogger at Everysaturdaymorning, a pro-choice clinic escort in Louisville, KY, has posted pictures and video of the latest disgusting tactic from the antis outside their clinic: wearing fake escort vests.

"To get a sense of what the brave pro-choice clinic escorts are dealing with in Louisville, check out the the video and transcript of an anti verbally harassing a patient after the jump. A warning that it may be triggering, especially to anyone who's not used to hearing this rhetoric."

[singing |Heather Nova - Walk This World]

It's apparently -16 outside right now. This means that, even with insulation and heating, it's damn cold in our house.

We've had around 6"-8" of snow on the ground here abouts, which makes walking everywhere difficult, most of this mass will now be just ice.

The lurgee of nameless evil spoiled my birthday and ruined my new-year, but I'm mostly better now so should be fine for Winter StabCon, preparations for which are almost complete.

baby shower snack questions [Jan. 6th, 2010|11:36 am]

[feeling | amused]

i'm going to be an aunt!!!!!! my best friend (and roommate) is expecting her first child in early march. I get the honor of throwing her baby shower and wanted to show off my mad crock skillz. the problem is i'm not sure what all to make. here are the details, any and all help is appreciated!!!!!!

i'm looking to feed 20ish people and have a large crock.

interested in appetizers, dips, and spreads.

i do not want to do meatballs or lil smokies. also a no go on the queso style dips. something hearty or other meat like products are welcome though.

bonus points if it's gluten free.

i would really really appreciate any and all recipes that you have tried for a gathering and would do over again. i don't mind prep work but something that can be done in 3 hours or less would be best since the party is at two and i will have lots of running around to do before the guests arrive.

have a wonderful day! :D

EDIT: thanks a ton to everyone who has offered up a recipe or suggestion! they all sound amazing and i'm sure if i don't make your suggestion for the party i'll be making it for myself soon after!!!

also a big thanks to everyone concerned about my gluten free remark. i want to assure everyone that yes, i do in fact understand celiac disease well. my mom is the guest in attendance who has the disease so i've had 26 years of working around a gluten free lifestyle. but like i said i appreciate the concern :)

Wonder Dalek [Jan. 6th, 2010|07:16 pm]

Andrew has just come home with a card for me, and a completely ace present.

The card is a Wonder Woman mask*, with holes cut out for your eyes and so you can fit it over your nose.

And you can see it here, modelled by this Dalek that [info]doctorstewie gave Andrew not long ago, because his other present to me is a Lego digital camera!

It’s the coolest thing ever, it even comes with extra Legos you can add to it.

* He wrote on the inside “The Wonder Woman mask is to help when trying is hard.” Aw! He knows how hard it’s been for me to keep trying sometimes lately.

One of the billion reasons I love my dad: in between the boring photos of my cousin’s wedding (which involve things like people’s garage doors, and photos of me in my pajamas and sticky-up hair opening presents Christmas morning, he has taken pictures of clouds. I like the way you can see the cornfields beyond our backyard, too.

Love in the time of LiveJournal [Jan. 6th, 2010|06:27 pm]

This.
Facebook sucks. It’s like 2001 all over again. Don’t get me wrong, 2001 was great... IN 2001. Do you remember 2001 - when almost everyone updated several times a day and entries were generally shorter? Some people updated like they were Twittering when there wasn’t even any such thing as Twitter. But do you know why people on lj stopped don that for the most part? Because it’s BORING. Because it lacks meaningful interaction. Because it was too much chatter. It was great for a while - when we couldn’t stand to be away from each other for longer than a couple hours. But our relationship matured beyond that constant need for reassurance and feedback and then those constant, short updates became an annoyance.
...
I liked the playfulness, but I wanted more, too. I wanted substance; I wanted meaningful interaction. My journal began to change then, and so did my friends list. I wasn’t the only one. I saw lots of complaints over the next few years about frequent, low substance updaters. The tide had changed. And so did my friends page. There were fewer and fewer one or two line updates and more and more longer posts. I got to know you better. Some people became essay writers. More of us got digital cameras and began adding photos to our posts.

But that change also brought pressure to “properly prepare” an entry. There was an unspoken rule against the one-line entry, or more than x number of entries in a day. Entries had to be detailed and forthcoming because the vague post (except maybe with acknowledgement and apologies) was also out of vogue. And then there were the days that were too full to allow time to sit and write up a ‘proper’ entry and we were afraid of ‘cluttering’ each other’s friends pages with multiple entries, so we wouldn’t write one, and that happened more and more often until we were out of the habit of sharing with each other, largely for fear of not following the new rules.
...
So I have been rethinking what *I* want to see on my friends page and what *I* want from LJ. What I want from LJ is simple: I want you; I want us. And we can’t have that if aren’t making the effort to talk to each other - and if we don’t feel free to do it.
- You know what? I don’t actually have an objection to more frequent and shorter posts.
- I do object to continuous posting without ever revealing what the fuck you’re talking about. Being cryptic is even less cool now that it was 8 years ago. If I can’t figure out what you’re talking about from reading the previous 3 entries in your journal, then uh.. no. More info or shush.
- I also have to admit that I’m not fond of the Twitter stuff. The formatting makes it difficult to read and so much of it is one part of a conversation between two or more people that I probably don’t know on a topic I can’t identify. I don’t read them and I don’t even register them as ‘updates’ any more.
- I love photos. Always have.
- I like recipes and lists and schedules and plans and timelines and summaries.
- I love travelogues, even if you only went to the dentist.
- I want to know what your kids are doing, how your mother is and why you want to strngle her this week.
- I like to hear your interpretation of things, what you think it all means.
- I want to hear about your goals, successes and failures, and when you just came out even.
- Your work, your play, your health... all of it.

And I like to hear it in 50 words or 850... whatever works best for you. So I’m doing the same.

Basically, a hospital in New York is being sued by an ER nurse who was "forced" to help with a 2nd trimester abortion, without which the woman would have died.

These fucking people.  DO YOUR JOB OR GET A FUCKING NEW ONE.

ETA:  I was wandering from comment to comment and stumbled on this comment.  I think it's SO true:

"According to a Gallup poll from July, 60 percent of Americans think abortion should be either illegal or 'legal only in a few circumstances.' " Clinic workers have a dark joke about people with this opinion: They want exceptions for rape, incest, and "me".

Really minor rant [Jan. 6th, 2010|05:05 pm]

[commanderd]
Okay, so the UK is kinda hit by snowfall at the moment, which to some of you from colder climes will mean not a lot - but 3 inches here is enough to stop trains and shut airports. Seriously. So I'm working from home owing to the trains not running.

Snow = lots of excited kids outside. Not a problem for me, they stay off my property and we're cool. Have fun! The UK doesn't see weather like this very often after all. But I did have to (first politely, then not quite so politely) tell a bunch of kids off for building a snowman. Why? Because they were building it on MY driveway right behind my car. Therefore making it doubly annoying that they were a) on my property and b) blocking my car in.

So I went out and asked them to take down Mr Snowman as it was blocking my car, and politely reminded them that if you want to build snowmen on other people's property it is polite to ask first. One of the kids said their mommy said they could build it here so I asked if they could go get mommy please. Which they did.

I asked her if her kids could please take down the snowman because it was blocking my car in. She told me to "stop being so fucking grumpy" (nice language there lady in front of 8 year olds) and marched the kids off. My arthritic limbs didn't appreciate being out in the snow demolishing a snowman with a shovel but hey, I did it. Had to get the fecking car out somehow.

She just knocked on the door a few minutes ago and told me that her kids were crying because I had destroyed their snowman. I replied back "yeah, but I managed to get my car out and basically that's all I was concerned with". Closing the door behind me. Like I said, a small incident but noteworthy.
